Queen’s Park Picks
Once a year, as part of World Architecture Day, the Ontario Association of Architects asks Ontario’s Members of Provincial Parliament to reflect on our province’s unique architectural legacy – both old and new – and to nominate one of their favourite buildings from within their riding. From these nominations, eight Queen’s Park Picks (“QP Picks”) are selected and curated into an exhibit.
What makes a building worthy of recognition? Sometimes, it is their age – their continued presence connecting us to generations of Ontarians that have lived here and helped shape our province. Other times, it is their bold design that captures our attention – a reminder of past and current ambitions, and the value of innovation and risk taking. Perhaps it is their role in the community – as places of gathering and kinship – that also make them extraordinary.
We do not always know the reasons behind a nomination, but we do know that these selections provide a rich cross-section of Ontario’s diverse architecture, full of stories waiting to be shared. Year after year, it has been exceptionally challenging to select only eight from the incredible list of buildings that have been nominated.
